Southwest Harbor is the working waterfront village on the quiet side of Mount Desert Island — less crowded than Bar Harbor, with its own character and a loyal following among visitors who prefer a slower pace.
Dining
The quiet side has its own food scene. Beal's Lobster Pier is the classic — a working wharf lobster pound right on the harbor. Red Sky Restaurant offers fine dining. Clark Point Cafe serves one of the best breakfasts on the island. Eat-A-Pita and Café 2 cover casual lunch. Common Good Soup Kitchen Café operates on a donations-based model.
Gardens & Museums
Charlotte Rhoades Butterfly Garden is a small, beautifully maintained pollinator garden with a Monarch Waystation — peak bloom in July and August. The Wendell Gilley Museum focuses on bird carving and wildlife art, featuring over 200 of Gilley's wooden bird carvings.
