Acadia National Park, on Mount Desert Island, has some of the most stunning coastal and mountain views in New England. Here are some of the best hikes with spectacular views — ranging from easier strolls to challenging climbs.

Coastal & Ocean View Trails

Ocean Path (Sand Beach to Otter Point)

Distance: ~4 miles round-trip. Difficulty: Easy. Stunning coastal views, Thunder Hole, Otter Cliffs. You can turn around at any point for a shorter walk.

Wonderland Trail

Distance: ~1.4 miles round-trip. Difficulty: Very easy. Flat forest walk leading to tide pools and rocky shorelines — great for families.

Ship Harbor Trail

Distance: ~1.3 miles loop. Difficulty: Easy. A charming mix of woods and coastal views with fewer crowds than Ocean Path.

Otter Point Overlook Loop

Distance: ~0.8 miles loop. Difficulty: Easy. Coastal trail with dramatic waves and cliffs, great for photography.

Visitors at Bubble Pond with Cadillac Mountain

Lake & Forest Trails

Jordan Pond Path

Distance: ~3.5 miles loop. Difficulty: Easy/Moderate (a few uneven sections and boardwalks). Circle Jordan Pond with views of "The Bubbles" mountains; stop at the Jordan Pond House after for popovers and tea.

Jesup Path and Hemlock Path Loop

Distance: ~1.5 miles loop. Difficulty: Easy. Scenic boardwalk through a birch and hemlock forest — peaceful and good for spotting birds.

Eagle Lake Carriage Road Loop

Distance: Varies — you can walk just a mile or two along the shore. Difficulty: Easy. Wide, crushed-stone carriage roads ideal for walking or biking; tranquil lake views.

Cadillac Summit Loop Trail

Distance: ~0.5 miles loop. Difficulty: Easy. 360° panoramic views from the highest point on the East Coast — beautiful sunrise or sunset spot.

Summit & Scenic Hikes

Precipice Trail

Difficulty: Very strenuous (iron rungs, cliffs). Distance: 2.5 miles round trip. Climb up Champlain Mountain via iron ladders and ledges for dramatic views over the Atlantic. Best for experienced hikers; not for those afraid of heights.

Beehive Trail

Difficulty: Moderate to strenuous. Distance: 1.4 miles round trip. A mini version of the Precipice — with ladders, cliffs, and a breathtaking overlook of Sand Beach and the ocean. Tip: Go up the Beehive Trail and descend via the Bowl Trail for a safer loop.

Cadillac Mountain South Ridge Trail

Difficulty: Moderate to hard. Distance: 7.5 miles round trip. Sweeping views all the way up to Cadillac's summit — where you can catch the first sunrise in the U.S. part of the year. Best for a longer, scenic hike without steep technical climbs.

Gorham Mountain Trail

Difficulty: Moderate. Distance: 3 miles round trip. Coastal views of the ocean, Otter Cliff, and Thunder Hole. A beautiful sunrise or sunset hike. Option: Combine with the Ocean Path for a longer coastal route.

Acadia Mountain Trail

Difficulty: Moderate. Distance: 2.5 miles round trip. Views over Somes Sound — the only fjard (glacial fjord) on the U.S. East Coast. Less crowded alternative to Cadillac or Champlain.

Jordan Pond Path + South Bubble Trail

Difficulty: Easy to moderate. Distance: 3.5 miles (loop) + 1 mile (add-on to South Bubble). Peaceful lakeshore views and the famous "Bubble Rock" perched above Jordan Pond. Bonus: Stop by Jordan Pond House for tea and popovers!

Schoodic Peninsula Trails

Schoodic Head, Anvil, Alder & East Trails Network

Distance: 2–4 miles round trip (depending on the route combination). Difficulty: Moderate. Climb through spruce-fir forest to Schoodic Head (440 ft) for panoramic views of Frenchman Bay, Mount Desert Island, and the Atlantic. Combine Anvil, Alder, and East Trails to form loops with a mix of forest, granite ledges, and ocean views. The Anvil Overlook is one of the most photographed spots in all of Schoodic.

Lower Harbor Trail

Distance: 0.6 miles one way. Difficulty: Easy. Scenic, flat forest walk with harbor views. Great for birdwatching and tidepool exploring near the water's edge. Can easily link with the carriage road network for a longer loop.

Schoodic Carriage Roads

Distance: ~8.3 miles total (network of multiple segments). Surface: Crushed gravel. Difficulty: Easy to moderate. Built in the traditional Rockefeller style, just like the carriage roads on Mount Desert Island — but far less crowded. Winding through forest and around ponds, they provide a serene, non-motorized route for walking, biking, or snowshoeing.

Schoodic Loop Road

Distance: 6-mile one-way scenic drive. Difficulty: Easy to moderate (some rolling hills). Numerous pull-offs with short paths to stunning granite headlands. The Schoodic Point area is a must-see, with crashing waves and 270° ocean views.
