Schoodic Peninsula

the quiet side of Acadia

The only mainland section of Acadia National Park. Dramatic granite headlands, pounding surf, evergreen forests, and far fewer crowds.

The Schoodic Peninsula is the only part of Acadia National Park located on the mainland. It's known for dramatic granite headlands, pounding surf, evergreen forests, and a fraction of the crowds found on Mount Desert Island. Visitors consistently describe it as Acadia's quiet side — equally beautiful, but far more serene.

Drive or Bike the Schoodic Loop Road

A 6-mile one-way scenic drive hugging the coastline. Expect sweeping ocean views, wave-washed granite, and pullouts perfect for photography or picnics. Great for sightseeing, photography, and cycling. Don't miss Schoodic Point — the peninsula's most dramatic surf zone.

Eagle Lake with Pemetic and Penobscot Mountains

Schoodic Point

The peninsula's signature destination: a broad granite expanse where powerful Atlantic waves crash against the rocks. Best at sunrise, stormy days, or golden hour. Watch for seabirds, lobster boats, and the endless ocean horizon.

Trails

Schoodic offers several quiet, lightly trafficked trails:

  • Schoodic Head Trail — short but rewarding climb to panoramic views
  • Alder Trail — gentle forest walk
  • Anvil Trail — moderate hike with rocky overlooks
  • Buck Cove Mountain — longer, more rugged option

Bike the Schoodic Bike Paths

A network of paved, car-free bike paths winds through the woods and along the coast — perfect for families or casual riders. Smooth surfaces, light traffic, connects to the Schoodic Institute and campgrounds.

Schoodic Institute & Frazer Point

Located at the former Navy base, the Schoodic Institute hosts science programs, art workshops, and educational events. It's a hub for research and learning within Acadia.

Frazer Point is a peaceful waterfront area with picnic tables, restrooms, and views of Winter Harbor.

Explore Winter Harbor

Just outside the park, this small fishing village offers local shops, art galleries, lobster pounds, and access to the Schoodic–Bar Harbor ferry (seasonal).
