Seal Harbor
Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Garden
Season: Late July–early September (limited days; reservations required). An Asian-inspired, formal, contemplative garden designed in the 1920s by Beatrix Farrand, one of America's most influential landscape architects. Combines Chinese and Japanese architectural elements with lush, carefully orchestrated perennial borders. Features a walled garden with stone sculptures, carved gates, and a serene moss garden. The plantings peak in late summer, making the short visiting window feel like a secret seasonal event.
Reservations are essential and often sell out early. Photography is allowed, but the garden encourages a quiet, reflective atmosphere. Combine your visit with a drive through Seal Harbor or a walk on nearby carriage roads.
Northeast Harbor
Asticou Azalea Garden
A Japanese-inspired landscape garden, best for photography, quiet walks, and spring blooms. Features vibrant azaleas and rhododendrons (peak: late May–June), a sand garden modeled after traditional karesansui, and a reflecting pond with stone pathways. Free to visit; donations appreciated.
Thuya Garden
A semi-formal English perennial garden, best for summer color, garden architecture, and scenic overlooks. Features terraced flower borders, the rustic Thuya Lodge, and handcrafted wooden gates and pergolas. Short uphill walk; parking at Asticou Terraces.
Bar Harbor & Sieur de Monts
The Wild Gardens of Acadia
A native plant sanctuary located at the Sieur de Monts Nature Center, best for learning local flora and nature photography. Features over 300 native plant species in habitat-themed sections (bog, meadow, forest, marsh) with easy walking paths.
College of the Atlantic Gardens & Campus Paths
Ecological and student-designed landscapes with Shore Path access, native plantings, and small sculpture installations. Open campus; self-guided. Best for casual strolls and coastal views.
Southwest Harbor & Somesville
Charlotte Rhoades Butterfly Garden
A pollinator-focused perennial garden, best for families, butterfly lovers, and summer blooms. Features a Monarch Waystation and educational displays. Peak bloom July–August. Small but beautifully maintained.
Somesville Museum & Gardens
A historic garden with the iconic white arched bridge — one of MDI's most photographed spots. Features seasonal flower beds. Great add-on to a Somes Sound drive.
